November fruit of the month is the Persimmon. Botanical name: Diospyrus Virginia a member of the Ebenaceae family. Persimmon trees are deciduous with edible persimmon fruit that likes full sun. The persimmon can be grown from a seed (best to plant after cooling in the refrigerator) or from persimmon plant. A persimmon tree grows to about 60 feet tall, they make beautiful shade trees and have pretty little pink to yellow 1 inch fruits. Oriental persimmons can be grown if you want a smaller trees, but they have larger fruit. We choose the persimmon as the November fruit of the month because the fruit ripens in the fall and is better flavored and picked after the first frost. If picked too early the fruit can have a sour flavor.
